Chapter Eight

Slider pulled his dinged and dented Chevy, into a parking space in front of the Northeast Amber Holiness Church. The photographer was not happy. He didn’t mind working evenings or nights when the scanner rousted him out to a fire, wreck, or potential riot, a news photographer’s dream. Those were just parts of his job. Darned if he’d ever ask another favor of Hank Thomas, the official advertising photog. Hank had reviewed, edited, and selected Tri-State Fair photos when Slider was still out shooting the fair and couldn’t meet the day’s deadline without help. The veteran photographer had known what would happen, even as he delegated the task to the advertising photog, but he didn’t have much choice. Hank was a legend at the payback he demanded for any favor. It could come at any time in any form. April once asked Hank to shoot a public building dedication because the news photogs were all busy. A month later, April found herself the unwilling dog sitter of Hank’s unfriendly shar-pei. The wrinkled mutt and Nearly mixed like oil and water. April spent the entire two weeks of Hank’s vacation with her house physically divided into war zones. Slider had helped build the plywood barriers that kept the two dogs from killing each other.

Could be worse, Slider thought, as he looked at the brown brick of the squarish, simple church building. It should be a quick shoot, even if he had to interrupt a quiet Wednesday evening at home. After all, the church was paying good money for a quarter-page add about their upcoming revival. If they wanted a shot of their church with the congregation inside, they’d have it. Slider was just grateful they’d allowed him to visit the Wednesday evening service instead of attending Sunday morning.

The strap of the camera bag fit comfortably in its familiar groove over Slider’s right shoulder. He already had the Nikon loaded with fresh batteries, and he planned on getting in and out as soon as possible. He could hear the sound of a traditional hymn, one that made Slider think of his grandmother, as an enthusiastic pianist accompanied an equally enthusiastic congregation. Slider wore his usual jeans, but he’d substituted an Oxford shirt for the usual t-shirt, and he wore one of his three ties, the one without cartoon characters. Slider took a deep breath and walked inside the church. He found a seat at the back and removed the camera from the bag. The congregation continued the song until the final notes died in a barrage of flourishes from the piano. Although the sanctuary was not full, Slider thought he could achieve the desired effect by carefully choosing the angle of his shot. Reverend Thomas asked for pictures of an attentive audience listening reverently to the words of God. On the drive over, Slider had translated the instructions into “the old fart wants everyone to see how important he is to his people.” Even without her presence, the photographer could hear April’s warning to keep his opinions to himself while he was in enemy territory.
